Torch work near wood and insulation
Most pipe joints sit an inch from something that burns. The flame that makes the joint will char a stud just as well. The rule for jobsites is short, and it works at home too.

The rule on a jobsite
The federal construction standard on fire prevention covers welding, cutting and heating. It starts with the obvious: take the work somewhere safe if you can. For a pipe in a wall you cannot, and the next paragraph applies.
If the object to be welded, cut, or heated cannot be moved and if all the fire hazards cannot be removed, positive means shall be taken to confine the heat, sparks, and slag, and to protect the immovable fire hazards from them.
Positive means is the phrase that matters. Hoping the stud will not catch is not a means. A shield between the flame and the wood is.

Before you light the torch
- Clear what you can move: paper, rags, cans of solvent, loose insulation.
- Wet down wood you cannot move, or cover it with a shield or a heat cloth.
- Look behind the wall. Old sawdust and paper-faced insulation light fast.
- Set the cylinder upright where it cannot fall.
Keep the means to put it out
Suitable fire extinguishing equipment shall be immediately available in the work area and shall be maintained in a state of readiness for instant use.
At home that means an extinguisher on the floor next to you, not in the kitchen. A spray bottle of water helps with a smouldering stud. It is no substitute.
Pick a torch you can shut off fast
A trigger-start torch goes out the moment you release the trigger, unless the flame lock is on. That is a safety feature in a tight space. Our torch heads, by ignition:
| Feature | Trigger start | Manual start |
|---|---|---|
| Torch heads in our range | 10 | 4 |
| Flame stops when you let go | Yes, with the lock off | No, close the valve |
| Needs a striker or lighter | No | Yes |

After the joint is made
- Do not leave at once. Wood can smoulder inside a wall well after the flame is out.
- Feel the framing near the joint with the back of your hand.
- Let the torch tip cool before it goes in the bag.
- A shield and care lower the risk. They do not remove it.
